Privacy Notice

Information we handle
Account: your user identifier, email address, display name, sign-in information supplied by our authentication provider and account timestamps.
Your work: novel titles and metadata, manuscript text, notes, images, structure, formatting, editor settings and backups.
Writing history: ordered document changes and their apparent source; selections before and after a change; timestamps; session and sequence identifiers; checkpoints; document and chain hashes; continuity gaps; and delivery status.
Technical context: browser user agent, timezone, connection and error information, local queue state and security logs needed to operate and interpret the service.
Novelmetrics does not intentionally record activity outside its own editor.

Who can see your words
Automated systems process manuscript content and writing history to provide the editor, backups and provenance analysis. Our product is designed so this is the normal path: an algorithm evaluates the record rather than a person routinely reading your prose.
Human access is restricted, but not technically impossible. Authorised operators and infrastructure providers may access the minimum data necessary for support you request, security and abuse investigations, service maintenance, legal compliance or protection of rights and safety. They are not invited to read manuscripts for curiosity, criticism or editorial review.
Future sharing tools will let you choose a reviewer. We will not publish a report or give a reviewer access merely because you created an account.
Our promises about your content
- We do not sell manuscripts or writing histories
- We do not use them to train generative AI models
- We do not use them for targeted advertising
- We do not make them public by default
Storage, security and retention
Novelmetrics uses specialist hosting, database, authentication and file-storage providers to run the service. Data may be processed where those providers operate. We use account-level access controls and cryptographic hashes to protect integrity, but no online service can guarantee absolute security.
Manuscripts and provenance history are retained while your account is active so the editor and its evidence remain useful. Backups and security records may remain for a limited period after deletion. We may retain information longer when law, dispute resolution, safety or enforcement requires it. More precise retention controls will be published as the beta matures.
Your choices
You can choose what to write, export your work, decide whether to use future sharing tools and stop adding to a record by no longer writing in Novelmetrics. Depending on where you live, you may also have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict or receive a copy of personal information, and to complain to a regulator.
Provenance recording is essential to this particular service and cannot currently be switched off for an individual document. If that recording is not acceptable for a project, use another editor for that project.
Changes to this notice
The service is in beta, so this notice will evolve with its sharing and verification tools. We will update the effective date and give additional notice when a change materially affects how manuscript content or writing history is used.
